Originally from Waterloo, Ontario, I graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1997 with a BA in Economics and a Diploma in Accounting. In 1998, I moved to Oakville, Ontario after securing my first full time position as an Accounts Receivable Clerk at MicroWarehouse in Mississauga, Ontario – a computer wholesale company. Eager to learn more, I was promoted to a Staff Accountant position after only six months.
My first management position occurred a year later as an Accounting Manager position at Ideal Graphics Inc., a commercial printer and publisher in Oakville, Ontario. In addition to the full cycle accounting, I was also responsible for cost control, production scheduling, HR and payroll. It was also my first experience in a manufacturing industry.
My next opportunity came with adidas-Salomon Canada in Concord, Ontario – I was recruited to become the Senior Accountant for the Salomon brand. Being a sports fanatic, having the opportunity to work with one of the largest sports apparel companies was great. In addition, I also gained experience in the wholesale/retail distribution business, where I was exposed to the process of importing/exporting, international reporting, and fund hedging.
In 2002, I ventured back in to the manufacturing industry after accepting a Controller position with Stone Straw Limited- a drinking straw manufacturer in Brantford, Ontario. As part of upper management, I was responsible for the full cycle accounting, cost control, purchasing, scheduling of manufacturing, HR, SRED, process control, and lean manufacturing processes. It was during this position that my wife and I decided to move closer to our families and in the winter of 2003, we moved to Paris, Ontario. It was also at this time that I earned my professional designation, becoming a Certified General Accountant (CGA) in September 2003.
In 2004, I ventured out of the accounting field and accepted a Business Development position with Paris Southern Lights and Calendar Club of Canada. I was responsible for business analysis, new business and product development, cost control, and support for the accounting department. My most memorable and rewarding experience at this company was helping to launch Virgin Mobile Canada across the nation. The company was contracted by Virgin Mobile to setup the retail locations across Canada, as well as hire/train/recruit dealers/employees across the country. This opportunity allowed me to learn about operations in the retail sector and I was involved with strategic planning and budgeting with the Senior Management at Virgin Mobile Canada. My knowledge and experience in accounting helped me immensely with making recommendations and making decisions.
After running the Virgin Mobile program for 2 years, I transitioned back in to the accounting department at Paris Southern Lights to become the Department Manager as the position became vacant due to a serious illness. With Virgin Mobile transitioning to full ownership and operations by Bell Canada, the timing was just right. After managing the department to a point where the department no longer required my expertise, I left the company and started my own retail operations company in 2009, ION Retail Solutions.
My corporation operated several different retail programs – including Hickory Farms Canada, Big Deal Liquidators, Halloween Alley, Pierced Parts, and a few other retail ventures. In 2012, I also helped develop and launch Funk-Off Piercing Deodorant and was lucky to be on CBC’s Dragons’ Den later that year. On Season 7, Episode 1, you can watch me secure a deal with Arlene Dickinson and Kevin O’Leary – the first time it was done in history I am told.
After 8 years of running my own retail company, I decided to start my own accounting practice – where I can utilize my accounting and business ownership experience to help other entrepreneurs and business owners with their operations. I provide full cycle accounting, income tax preparation/planning, corporate/personal tax returns, strategy consulting, operational support, business development/guidance and process recommendations.
Currently, I reside in Paris, Ontario with my wife Tabatha, our daughter Taylor, our son Tanner, our dog Molly, and our cat Tiger.
I am a CPA, CGA with over 20 years accounting and business experience in several different industries: retail, wholesale, manufacturing, and more. My experience ranges from working with small family businesses to large corporations. As an entrepreneur, I have owned and operated my own business and know the challenges and frustrations that can take place. My goal is to bring this experience and knowledge to you and help you the best that I can.
